Cholesterol testing is done to determine if your cholesterol is high and to estimate your risk of heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, as well as blood vessel diseases.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the blood and in all cells of the body. The body needs some cholesterol for cells and organs to stay healthy, but too much cholesterol is bad for your health.

There are two main types of cholesterol: “bad cholesterol” is low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and “good cholesterol” is high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Too high a level of LDL cholesterol in your blood can put you at risk for heart disease and other serious health problems.

Cholesterol testing is done to determine if your cholesterol is elevated and to estimate your risk of heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, as well as blood vessel disease.
