What is constitutional karyotype?
Karyotype analysis consists of the visual analysis of the complete set of chromosomes obtained in metaphase after cell culture. It allows the analysis of all chromosomes in a single test, detecting numerical chromosomal abnormalities (triploidies, trisomies 21, 13, 21, monosomies, etc.) and structural ones (duplications, deletions, insertions, translocations, inversions, isochromosomes, presence of aberrant chromosomes, etc.). It also allows the detection of cellular mosaicisms greater than 10%.
Chromosomal abnormalities (numerical and structural) are responsible for a significant proportion of genetic diseases. They are associated with various aspects of human pathology: alterations in morphogenesis, mental retardation, developmental delay or infertility.
